The Panthers had some hope that Ian Thomas could step into Greg Olsen’s shoes as the team’s top tight end, but he failed to take advantage of his opportunity. That means Carolina will look to find a new starter in either the draft or free agency.

Pitts is the best tight end prospect in this year’s class by a wide margin. He’s not a great in-line blocker, but he profiles to be an elite receiver. In truth, Pitts looks more like a wide receiver when he’s flexed out in the slot running routes than a tight end.

His six-foot-six frame gives him the large catch radius required to turn mediocre throws into big plays for his quarterback. That could allow him to quickly emerge as one of Bridgewater’s favorite targets in the red zone. Turning more red zone trips into touchdowns will be a big priority for the Panthers heading into next season.

The Panthers might look to fill a more important positional need like tackle or cornerback at this spot in the draft, but Pitts’ talent may be too much for Rhule to pass up on. He’s a legitimate difference-maker at a position of real value for innovative offensive minds. This might seem like a potential luxury pick for a non-playoff team, but it’s easy to see how Pitts could help turn the Panthers’ offense from good to great.
