With all due respect to both Winston and Cook, Williams’ impending departure will be much more painful for the Saints. Losing a top-quality starter at safety will be a significant blow for the New Orleans defense.

The Saints would love to retain Williams in free agency, but he will quickly become too expensive to make that a practical consideration. Safeties aren’t a highly-paid position in free agency on the whole, but Williams will be an exception. His ability to make plays in coverage down the field makes him a perfect fit for almost any defense in the league.

New Orleans will need to spend valuable resources to acquire a replacement for Williams as their starting free safety. They will likely need to find that player in the draft. The team lacks the salary cap room to sign anything other than bargain free agents. That won’t be good enough to find a quality starter capable of filling in for Williams.

Saints fans will be upset when Williams leaves, but the truth is that the franchise was always going to be forced to part with some high-end talent to cure their salary cap situation at some point. The fact that paying the piper coincides with Brees’ retirement makes this a tough offseason in The Big Easy.
