Lance Briggs has the perfect solution for the Chicago Bears quarterback problem
By Josh Hill
If the Chicago Bears want to fix their quarterback problem, all they need to do is a little FitzMagic.
One of the most pressing questions the Chicago Bears face this offseason, as they arrive at a critical fork-in-the-road situation, is which way to turn?
Should the trio of Matt Nagy, Mitchell Trubisky, and Ryan Pace be brought back for one more season? Or should the Bears reload with a new head coach, general manager, and veteran quarterback to try and squeeze the championship window its defense has presented?
Thanks to an accidental playoff berth, it seems like Option A will be the one the Bears choose in 2021. But former linebacker Lance Briggs, who went to a Super Bowl as part of a world-class defense in Chicago, thinks otherwise.
Briggs thinks Ryan Fitzpatrick would be a perfect fit for the Bears in 2021 and both give the team a chance to win while also improving the quarterback room.
Chicago Bears should target Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason
“I think you should go and get Ryan FitzMagic,” Briggs said on NBC Chicago’s Football Aftershow. “He’s a high risk, high reward guy, but he tends to be high reward early. He can come in and move the offense. He’s vetted. He went to Harvard, so you know he’s smart. There’s a lot of things, he’s got a lot of intangibles.”
Fitzpatrick has made a career out of being a veteran journeyman who steps in when a team with a shaky quarterback situation needs some assistance. He’s not quite a Winston Wolfe-level fixer, but he’s wielded positive results at each stop during the third act of his career.
He helped bridge the gap for the Jets to draft a franchise quarterback (it’s not his fault they ended up screwing it all up), mopped up the mess Jameis Winston made by showing us that Tampa Bay was actually a good team when it had a good quarterback, and has cleaned up after Tua Tagovailoa.
If you need a veteran quarterback to show up to light a match under a young and underperforming starter, Fitzpatrick is your guy. He’s the Big Bird Kicking Down The Door meme come to life.
Chicago is in a situation tailor-made for Fitzpatrick’s talents. He’d either show Trubisky the ropes he seemingly can’t find or arrive as an Angel of Death to help wipe the slate clean without completely tearing down the franchise for a rebuild.
