Pick Analysis. New England Patriots. player. Scouting Report. AFC East. . 3.. 47

The Patriots lack of offensive weapons was magnified this year. And no, it probably wouldn’t have mattered if Cam Newton was at his best with a normal offseason to learn a new playbook. The quarterback question is the biggest one for New England this offseason, but it won’t matter who the quarterback is next season (or beyond) if the talent around him isn’t aggressively upgraded.

The possible departure of Julian Edelman would create an even larger need for the Patriots at wide receiver (at least theoretically). They can also add $4 million to their already nice chunk of cap space by cutting Edelman, who may not have a place in the future of the franchise and a looming rebuild/reload.

Regardless of Edelman’s status, the Patriots have the means to be aggressive in free agency and as mentioned the wide receiver class is deep.

Godwin will still only turn 25 years old a couple weeks before free agency starts (Feb. 27), so many of his prime years seem to still be in front of him. That makes him an appealing target for any team with a need at wide receiver, and the Patriots fit that bill more than anyone right now.
