Notre Dame football: Fighting Irish add Wisconsin transfer to QB room

After losing his job to Graham Mertz, Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is transferring to Notre Dame with hopes of succeeding Ian Book under center.

Jack Coan began the 2020 offseason with hopes of winning the starting quarterback job for the Wisconsin Badgers. He beat out for the job by Graham Mertz who had an impressive debut vs. Illinois before sitting the next few weeks due to testing positive for COVID. However, the signs were clear for Coan that the future of Wisconsin football was in the hands of Mertz and he’d have to look elsewhere if he wanted to be a starter.

Now, Coan has found his second home as a member of the Notre Dame football team after announcing his transfer this week.

Coan will be the front-runner to start for the Fighting Irish with the departure of three-year starter, and all-time winning quarterback, Ian Book.

In 2019, Coan completed 69.9 percent of his passes for 2,727 yards with 18 touchdowns to only five interceptions. The 6-foot-2, 221-pound Coan was also reportedly interested in transferring to Tennessee, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, before picking Notre Dame to finish his college career.

That’s already a great sign of his decision-making for the presumptive Notre Dame starting quarterback for 2021.
