West Virginia football got Austin Kendall by transfer and now he’s leaving the Mountaineers through the transfer portal.

After coming off the bench to lead West Virginia football to a win over Army in the Liberty Bowl, Austin Kendall has entered the transfer portal.

Kendall lost his starting job to Jarret Doege, a transfer from Bowling Green, this season but went out with a bang after throwing a pair of touchdowns in the comeback to get a bowl win.

Now, Kendall will look to get a starting job at his new home. This marks the second time Kendall has transferred after he began his career at Oklahoma. After sitting behind Heisman winners in Norman, Kendall got his opportunity in 2019 as a graduate transfer with the Mountaineers and threw 1,989 yards with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions before being supplanted by Doege to finish the season.

Kendall will have one more season of eligibility left at his new home. He may have to drop from the Power 5 to a Group of Five program for a starting opportunity, however.

His lack of consistency and production during his starts will limit the teams interested in him, but he’ll still draw interest from teams in the MAC, American, Sun Belt and Conference USA, in particular.

It’s a bit of a fall for the former Oklahoma quarterback where signal-callers go on to be Heisman winners and No. 1 picks during his time in Norman. However, for Kendall, it’s all about getting on the field and having an opportunity to show what he can do.

At least he showed in his West Virginia football farewell that he can still deliver when it matters. His next team will be counting on that player showing up for the entirety of a season.
