Alex Smith’s miraculous return from injury should earn him a starring role in a Disney move in the not so distant future. Unfortunately for Washington, his storybook ending isn’t going to end with him piloting his team to a Super Bowl title.

Smith has performed like a below-average starter in 2020. That was good enough to beat out the likes of Dwayne Haskins and Taylor Heinecke in Washington, but he’s not a long-term solution for Rivera at the game’s most important position.

It’s easy to see why a quarterback like Watson would appeal to Washington’s coaching staff. Rivera enjoyed a lot of success with Cam Newton during his days in Carolina. He understands how to work with a quarterback who can make big plays with both his arm and legs.

Don’t overlook Washington’s need to win over fans who might have become disillusioned with the team’s off-the-field issues. Making a player with Watson’s wide-ranging fan appeal the face of the franchise would go a long way towards smoothing some of those issues out. He’d also give Washington a great player to unveil a new nickname before the start of the 2021 campaign. Washington has a lot of reasons to make a big move for Watson this offseason.
