Boise State hires former Broncos player, Oregon assistant Andy Avalos as head coach

Boise State football has found a new head coach, former Broncos player and Oregon defensive coordinator, Andy Avalos, who will succeed Bryan Harsin.

Andy Avalos is the new head coach of the Boise State Broncos.

The news was first reported by B.J. Rains of the Idaho Press.

Avalos spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Oregon where his units were among the best in the Pac-12 and featured several future NFL players.

The former Boise State linebacker roamed the blue turf from 2001-2005 and later coached at his alma mater from 2011-2018. Avalos initially coached the defensive line then linebackers then was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2016-2018 before leaving for Oregon.

Avalos was viewed as one of two leading candidates for the job after Harsin left Boise State to take the head coaching job with the Auburn Tigers. Avalos and fellow Boise alum, Kellen Moore, were the top two targets but after Moore elected to stay on the Dallas Cowboys staff, the job was all but a certainty to go to Avalos.

Rains reports Montana State coach Jeff Choate and USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell were also in the mix.
