National Championship Game: Urban Meyer predicts Alabama-Ohio State winner and final score
Urban Meyer has weighed in with his predictions for the National Championship Game between Alabama and Ohio State.
If you have to wonder too long about who former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is picking in the National Championship Game between the Buckeyes and Alabama, you are overthinking it.
While the Crimson Tide are a touchdown favorite, or a little more depending on what oddsmaker you look at, Meyer is riding with Ryan Day, Justin Fields and Ohio State to win the National Championship.
No surprise, right?
Urban Meyer thinks the Ohio State defense will lead them past Alabama
Meyer thinks both offenses will score plenty but the difference will be the defenses that can stop the other prolific offenses the most. For that reason, Meyer thinks Ohio State’s defense will be able to stop Alabama’s explosive offense that features Heisman winner, DeVonta Smith, Davey O’Brien winner, Mac Jones, and Doak Walker winner, Najee Harris, not to mention, the offensive line winning the Joe Moore Award.
“I think there are two terrific offenses, obviously, Alabama versus Ohio State,” Meyer said on FOX Sports’ CFB Playoff Preview extravaganza. “I’m going to pick the defenses. To win a game like this, you have to stop these great offenses four to five times. I said that when Florida played Alabama for the SEC Championship. They actually did stop them five times, however, three of them were called back. One was a turnover and three were penalties extending drives.
“I’m going to pick the Buckeyes here. I think it’s going to be 38-35, Ohio State will come up with those four to five stops and this will be one of the classic National Championship games in recent history.”
Alabama has gone 0-4 against the spread in their national championships so from a viewing standpoint, I hope it’ll be a great game, but Meyer may be picking with his heart and not as much with his head. Then again, if Ohio State plays as they did vs. Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, they’ll definitely be tough to beat.
