Washington Football Team targets in 2021 NFL Draft

The Washington Football Team can get back to the playoffs and repeat as NFC East champions if they hit a home run in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Washington Football Team’s unlikely run to the NFL playoffs is over and, while the arrow is pointing up for the franchise under Ron Rivera, their 7-9 record is illustrative of a team that still has a significant number of issues to fix to become a legitimate contender in the NFC.

The strength of Washington’s defense will carry the team a long way, however, the offense was nothing short of anemic in 2020, with quarterback an obvious need for a team that parted with 2018 first-round pick Dwyane Haskins before the end of the season.

But their unlikely success in 2020 has left Washington in a position in the draft from which landing a new franchise quarterback is unlikely. Hence, Washington’s draft may be focused on stacking the deck around Taylor Heinicke who was impressive in the Wild Card loss to the Buccaneers.

Washington dominated on the defensive side of the trenches, the continued investment in first-round picks on the defensive line netting substantial dividends.

It was a different story on the offensive line, with Alex Smith under consistent pressure throughout his remarkable comeback season, and reinforcements up front are likely to be high on Rivera’s wish list.

Improving the offense will also require further playmakers to make life easier for Heinicke or whoever is under center. There is not as much need for help on defense but investment in the secondary akin to what they have done on the defensive line in recent years would set that side of the ball up for long-term success.
