1. Joe Thuney

As mentioned previously, Washington clearly needs to add a starting wideout via either free agency or the draft. That doesn’t change Rivera’s desire to establish a physical ground game. With starting guard Brandon Scherff heading to free agency, it will be imperative for Rivera to ink a quality replacement to make sure the interior of his offensive line continues to improve.

Outside of Scherff, Thuney looks to be the best guard projected to hit the open market. The odds are stacked against the Patriots electing to put the franchise tag on him for the second time. Don’t expect the Patriots to give their talented guard a massive contract to keep him from free agency either.

Thuney’s versatile skill set as a run blocker could open up things for Washington’s ground game. He’s not a classic mauler, but he doesn’t get beat by even the largest of defensive tackles. The development of Thuney’s game as a pass blocker in recent years has transformed him into one of the most complete offensive guards in the NFL.

Many teams are still hesitant to pay a premium for guards. That gives Washington a real chance to lock Thuney up on a long-term deal at a reasonable cap number. Landing him won’t be the glitziest move of the offseason, but it could turn into quite the coup for Rivera and his coaching staff.
