Steelers draft rumors, Justin Fields

1. Justin Fields

If the Steelers really want to solve their quarterback issues, they need to make the bold choice to move up in Round 1 to select an elite prospect. They aren’t going to pry Trevor Lawrence away from the Jaguars at No. 1, but they could potentially position themselves to secure the class’s second-best signal-caller.

Fields’ draft stock is all over the board at the moment. He could go as high as No. 2, but several recent mocks have him falling outside the top-10 altogether. His stellar display against Clemson in the National Semifinal won him a lot of fans in NFL circles.

Fields has the strong arm required to make every NFL throw, but it’s his athleticism that really gives him a chance to grow into a star at the next level. He’s not going to become the next Lamar Jackson as a runner, but he could give Pittsburgh something akin to what Josh Allen gives Buffalo on the ground. That would give the Steelers’ offense an extra dimension it sorely needs heading into 2021.

The price to move up and grab Fields would be a blow to Pittsburgh’s draft capital, but the modern NFL is driven by star quarterbacks. If the Steelers believe Fields can grow into an All-Pro they should do whatever it takes to acquire him.
