5 landing spots for JuJu Smith-Schuster in NFL free agency
Coming off an NFC East title and giving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a run for their money in the Wild Card Round, the outlook in Washington is bright. Quarterback is a top offseason priority, with Alex Smith taking time to ponder his future and no obvious in-house answers.
Tight end Logan Thomas took a big step this year, and he’s a key cog going forward, but Washington clearly needs an upgrade at wide receiver beyond Terry McLaurin.
Despite not playing more than 10 percent of the offensive snaps in a game until Week 7, Cam Sims was the next most productive wideout on the team this year (32 catches for 477 yards). Sims continued to state his case for a big role next season with a 100-yard game against Tampa Bay, but ideally he’s not going to be counted on as the No. 2 guy.
Smith-Schuster had by far his best year thus far opposite Antonio Brown in 2018, and he’s otherwise fallen short of being anywhere near the kind of receiver that scares opposing defenses.
McLaurin looks like that guy for Washington, and Smith-Schuster can ease his burden as an ideal No.2 that opponents have to account for. Washington has the cap space (around $42 million right now, according to Over The Cap) to get a quarterback and notable bolster their wide receiver group.
