Mac Jones outdoes Joe Burrow’s record-setting championship game performance
Alabama quarterback Mac Jones played so well Monday night he surpassed some of Joe Burrow’s record marks set only one year ago before the game was even close to being over.
Joe Burrow’s stardom reached its peak in last year’s National Championship Game. He threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns in the championship win over Clemson.
So what did Mac Jones do for Alabama in this year’s title matchup against Ohio State? He just went out and outdid Burrow with plenty of time to spare.
Jones has his own legendary night
Jones, who was battling an injury, went 36/45 for 464 yards and five touchdowns before the fourth quarter was halfway over. His numbers may have been even more mind-blowing if an injury didn’t remove Heisman-winning receiver DeVonta Smith and his 215 yards from the game early.
The Alabama signal-caller certainly saved his best for last. He set season-best marks in completions, yards, and tied his mark of five touchdowns he set in the SEC Championship Game against Florida. The difference against Ohio State he didn’t throw an interception like he did against the Gators.
Smith would not have been in a position to win the Heisman if not for the great play of Jones. The duo was unstoppable and the Buckeyes stood no chance with the way the quarterback was slinging the ball around.
Burrow became an LSU legend because of his great championship performance. Jones’ name will now go down in Alabama lore for doing even better and bringing another title back to the Crimson Tide.
