Najee Harris breaks Derrick Henry’s SEC single-season TD record

Alabama running back Najee Harris set a new SEC single-season record in the first half of Monday night’s National Championship Game.

Alabama running back Najee Harris has been boosting his NFL draft stock throughout the 2020 season. His fast start Monday night against Ohio State only helps his cause.

Harris opened the scoring with a touchdown run and had a receiving touchdown in the second quarter. That latter score not only put the Crimson Tide back in the lead but also set a new SEC single-season record.

Harris entered the game with 27 total touchdowns this season, which was one shy of Derrick Henry’s mark from 2015. He is now at 29 before halftime and could keep adding to his record-breaking season.

The running back has also done this on a shorter schedule and given all the circumstances of the season, his new record should carry an asterisk in a good way.

Harris’ most explosive game of the year came against Florida in the SEC Championship. He ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns, only to top his own mark with three receiving touchdowns as well in the 52-46 shootout win for Alabama.

Monday night was supposed to be a battle between Harris and Ohio State running back Trey Sermon. Unfortunately, Sermon headed to the hospital following an injury suffered on the opening drive. Thus, it is the Harris and DeVonta Smith show down in Miami. Both players are having all-time seasons and the fact they are breaking records is no surprise.
