Mac Jones on Alabama title: We’re the best team to ever play
Mac Jones is ready to call the Alabama Crimson Tide the best college football team ever after their National Championship Game victory over Ohio State.
On the biggest stage of his life, quarterback Mac Jones delivered for the Alabama Crimson Tide. After a tumultuous year of playing football in the midst of COVID-19, the redshirt junior signal-caller stepped under center for another 60 minutes and put forth a masterpiece that led Nick Saban’s team to their sixth National Championship under his watch, beating Ohio State handily, 52-24.
Every phase of the game was dominated by the Crimson Tide. Jones threw for 464 yards and five touchdowns, Devonta Smith set records despite being limited to only one half, Najee Harris found the end zone three times and the defense suffocated electric Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields.
But dominance was nothing new for Jones and Alabama this season. They quickly emerged as the best team in college football and never gave anyone doubts about that fact. However, Mac Jones doesn’t just think they were the best team this year; the quarterback, fresh off winning a title, says this Crimson Tide team is the best ever:
Some might call that a little post-win hubris. Then again, Jones might have a valid point.
Mac Jones and Alabama earned a spot among the pantheon of college football greats.
Unprecedented circumstances resulting from the ongoing pandemic created challenges for every college football team in the 2020 season. You could make the case, though, that the Crimson Tide and SEC programs faced the most difficult tasks, playing a conference-only schedule in the most vaunted league in the country while Jones entered his first full year as the starter.
Jones was undaunted by the pressure of the task at hand, though. Armed with a Heisman Trophy winner in Smith, they answered every test put before them and did so with aplomb.
Last year, we saw Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers deliver a historic performance of their own and were quick to crown that team as the best ever. However, with what Alabama had to endure this season and with how dominantly they wrapped up their title, they are right on par with what LSU did a season ago.
There will always be debate about which college football teams are the greatest of all-time. And while some may disagree with Jones’ assessment of the situation, the newly minted National Champions undoubtedly earned a place in that conversation.
