Rams: Sean McVay and Jared Goff are apparently feuding
By Mike Luciano
Sean McVay and Jared Goff don’t have a great relationship right now.
While the Los Angeles Rams did win a playoff game this season, most of the credit for that win went to Brandon Staley’s top-ranked defense, while quarterback Jared Goff continued failing to return to the superstar level he was at in 2017 and 2018. With Sean McVay’s patience all but gone, the two don’t have the best relationship right now.
According to Steve Wyche, McVay and Goff are in need of “marriage counseling”, as the last two seasons have eroded McVay’s confidence in the former No. 1 overall pick.
Jared Goff has started to regress during the last two seasons
Goff’s first two years under McVay made him look like the next star quarterback in this league, as he threw 60 touchdowns against just 19 picks, made two Pro Bowls, and got the Rams to a Super Bowl. However, Goff has taken a major step back over the last two seasons, throwing 29 interceptions in 31 games.
While Goff’s arm talent and deep accuracy are worthy of praise, his inability to make plays off-script and use his legs to extend plays put a cap on how successful he can be in a McVay offense.
Unfortunately, the Rams might be in the same situation that Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles are in, as both quarterbacks will likely be back with the team in 2021 due to their massive contract extensions. Goff will count for $34 million against the Rams‘ cap next year, and he will account for $65 million in dead cap if not on the roster.
In what promises to be an unprecedented season in terms of quarterback movement, Goff might have just inadvertently put his name in the rumor mill, as McVay could ask Les Snead to get a more mobile quarterback for his offense.
