Michigan football will have to replace Zach Charbonnet after the former leading rusher entered the transfer portal.

Zach Charbonnet came to Michigan with a ton of potential as the No. 46 overall recruit with offers to USC, LSU and Notre Dame among his list of suitors.

After a strong freshman season in 2019 when the 6-foot-1, 220-pound running back rushed for a team-high 726 yards and Michigan freshman record 11 touchdowns, Charbonnet fell off in 2020 and is now in the transfer portal.

2020 was a disappointing season for everyone at Michigan and Charbonnet was no exception. His rushing totals dipped to just 124 yards on only 19 carries. He did lead the team with 6.8 yards per carry but he took a backseat to Hassan Haskins with 61 carries for 275 yards and six touchdowns.

Charbonnet earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in 2019 but will not look to rejuvenate his once-promising career elsewhere.

He should receive plenty of interest on the market, but may not get the opportunities at a program like Michigan but still should get an opportunity to start and attempt to live up to his potential he flashed as a freshman.

Michigan should be fine without Charbonnet with former top recruit, Donovan Edwards joining Haskins and Blake Corum in the backfield that should take the pressure off whoever wins the quarterback job.
