Former Packers GM Ted Thompson passes away at 68

Heartbreaking news has arrived for Green Bay Packers fans. It has been reported that former general manager Ted Thompson has passed away at 68. 

The Green Bay Packers family has lost a team legend this week — beat reporter Tom Silverstein is reporting that former general manager Ted Thompson, who made countless brilliant moves for the front office over the years, has passed away. Thompson just turned 68 years old last week.

Thompson loved everything about the Packers and Lambeau Field, first joining the team as assistant director of pro personnel all the way back in 1992. It was his first job with Green Bay and it most certainly wouldn’t be his last.

In 1993, Thompson was promoted to director of pro personnel, a position he held through 1997. After working his way up the ladder, he ended up leaving for Seattle to become the Seahawks’ vice president of football operations from 2000-2004. Then in 2005, Thompson made his way back home to Green Bay to become the team’s general manager.

He held that position from 2005-2017, highlighted by the organization’s 2011 Super Bowl win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately for Thompson, his health started to take a negative turn, which he said led to him stepping down as GM in 2017. After spending a year away from the Packers, Thompson took a role as senior advisor to football operations with the team.

He remained in that role until his unexpected and tragic death on Wednesday. In May of 2019, Thompson announced that he had been diagnosed with an autonomic disorder. He revealed that sickness shortly after he had been inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame.

In addition to his great work in NFL front offices, Thompson played 10 seasons in the NFL, all with the Houston Oilers.
