The Minnesota Vikings must replace their former offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak.

Gary Kubiak had been an NFL coach for a very long time, but has decided to retire from the coaching profession once again.

The former Texas A&M standout first came to prominence as John Elway’s backup with the Denver Broncos. In the second part of his NFL career, Kubiak became a phenomenal head coach for the Houston Texans and a Super Bowl-winning coach for the Broncos. He briefly retired after his coaching stint in Denver. Kubiak resurfaced with the Minnesota Vikings a few years ago.

Replacing Kubiak will be tough, as he was always an overqualified offensive coordinator when he was not leading a team of his own. Synonymous with winning, Minnesota must act quickly to fill the void by Kubiak’s retirement from the coaching profession. Fortunately, the Vikings are a well-run organization and will have plenty of great candidates available to replace Kubiak in 2021.

The Son of Marty Ball might know a thing or two about running the football

When the Vikings are at their best as an offense, they win through a power running game. They employ one of the best running backs in the NFC in Dalvin Cook and should look to bring in an offensive coordinator who values the ground game as much Kubiak did and Kevin Stefanski did before him. One guy who should be considered for this important role is Brian Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer has been a longtime offensive coordinator. He has worked with the New York Jets, the St. Louis Rams, the Georgia Bulldogs, the Indianapolis Colts and most recently with the Seattle Seahawks. In Seattle, Schottenheimer had great success coordinating an offense centered around superstar quarterback Russell Wilson. It was shocking when Seattle threw him under the bus.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll wanted to go with a coordinator was was more about running the football than even Schottenheimer. Did he realize Schottenheimer’s father Marty Schottenheimer is the creator of Marty Ball: Run, run, pass punt? It is a very simplistic offensive approach, but one that pairs well for a strong defensive-minded culture like Minnesota has.

While Schottenheimer’s teams never truly live up to expectations, they do establish an offensive identity quickly. If he were to be the next Vikings offensive coordinator, he would have no issues having Kirk Cousins hand the ball off to Cook. It would be like having Marshawn Lynch in his prime, ready to go full-blown Beast Mode on the opposition. Is Schottenheimer a candidate, though?
