Is there a more romantic football thing than an NFC Championship Game at Lambeau Field in the snow?

For only the ninth time in franchise history, the Green Bay Packers are playing in the NFC Championship Game.

Wait, didn’t the Packers make it to a couple of Super Bowls back in the 60s? They did, but Green Bay played in the NFL Championship Game which is what the title game was called before the AFL-NFL merger.

Since 1960, the Packers have played in just nine NFC Championship games and all of them have happened in the last quarter-century. For just the third time in that span, the game will be played at Lambeau Field.

For a franchise as closely tied to the romanticization of football, there isn’t a more perfect setting.

There’s snow all over Lambeau, a trip to the Super Bowl is on the line between one of the league’s most storied franchises and perhaps its greatest quarterback.

It’s football nirvana.

It sounds corny, but this is football weather and it feels right. Is there a better setting for Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers to do battle with a shot at football immortality on the line?

Green Bay is hosting the NFC Championship Game for just the fourth time in franchise history, if we go ahead and count the pre-merger Super Bowl era championship games. In those games, the Packers are 2-1, beating the Dallas Cowboys in 1967 (in the infamous Ice Bowl) to get to Super Bowl II and beating the Carolina Panthers in 1996 to get to Super Bowl XXXI.

Both times the Packers hosted the NFC Championship Game and won, they went on to win the Super Bowl.

The last time Green Bay hosted the NFC Championship Game, however, they fell to the New York Giants — who went on to upset the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

So if history is telling us anything, whoever emerges from an NFC Championship Game played at Lambeau Field is destined to win the Super Bowl. We’ll have to wait and see if that streak ends up continuing, but for now the football gods have gifted us all a picturesque title game for the ages.
