NFL Draft rumors: Trevor Lawrence isn’t assuming the Jaguars draft him
By John Buhler
Trevor Lawrence does not feel it is a forgone conclusion he is going to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Even though everybody and their brother has made Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence the next face of the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise, the highly-touted signal-caller remains uncertain that he will be going No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lawrence is going about the draft process with a level head, working with quarterback guru Jordan Palmer in California. Here is what Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network had to say about what is going on in Lawrence’s camp these days.
“He is out training in California with Jordan Palmer, former NFL quarterback, the brother of Carson Palmer, who has prepped a lot of these guys for the draft. My understanding is that Lawerence is taking the approach that ‘I’m not gonna assume the Jaguars are taking me. I am going to prepare for the draft process to present the best possible Trevor Lawrence for all the teams involved.”
“So I think that’s a good approach No. 1. No. 2, as Palmer has dealt with some of these guys before, he is going to start to prepare for what’s life going to be like in the NFL. ‘What’s my week going to look like?’ So right now he’s going through exercises where he is taking a team in the playoffs and he’s breaking them down as if he’s game-planning for them.”
“So on Monday he reviews the last couple of games for that defense. Tuesday, base pressures. Wednesday, sub pressures. Thursday, third down. Friday, red zone. Because that is what your week is going to be like in the NFL so he’s getting a taste of that. I think that’s a huge reason why a lot of these guys hit the ground running.”
Taking the draft process in stride is the best approach for Trevor Lawrence
While it would be shocking to see Lawrence play for any other team besides the Jaguars at this point, his level-headless throughout the draft process will serve him. Maybe new Jacksonville head coach has an affinity for a former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback by the name of Justin Fields? If that is the case, Lawrence could end up playing for a team like the New York Jets.
With there being several teams with quarterbacking uncertainty such as the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions, the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers, maybe one of those front offices has the stones to move all the way up to No. 1 and draft the best quarterbacking prospect to come out since Andrew Luck back in 2012? Once again, this is a process that must unfold.
Until Lawrence is rocking the Black and Teal, there is always a (minuscule) chance he could end up elsewhere.
