Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney may have had COVID in early January.

Shortly after the Tigers’ season came to an end, it is reported that Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney may have contracted the coronavirus.

Clemson fell to the national runner-up Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021 Sugar Bowl. The Tigers were without offensive coordinator Tony Elliott in the national semifinal, as he previously tested positive for the virus. News of Swinney reportedly testing positive comes from a video shared on running back Darien Rencher‘s girlfriend’s video blog. Obviously, Clemson has not disclosed this.

Can you imagine if Dabo Swinney could not coach in the national championship?

News of Swinney possibly coming down with the coronavirus first surfaced internally when he was only able to be present for the team’s end of the year banquet virtually. The interesting timeline in all of this is had Swinney had COVID shortly after New Year’s Day, he may not have been able to coach in the national championship game had Clemson defeated Ohio State.

That would have been massive news if Swinney could not coach against his alma mater and Clemson’s southeastern rival in the title bout. Of course, the game would have been played as is with someone like defensive coordinator Brent Venables filling in for him, possibly Elliott if he cleared the COVID-19 protocols in place. Either way, it would have been a messy situation.

The good news is Swinney seems to have recovered and Clemson is back to business in 2021.
