It looks like former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell is transferring once again, this time from the University of Miami.
Former four-star recruit Tate Martell is on the move again, this time taking his talents elsewhere after leaving the University of Miami. If you’ve been following Martell since his high school days in Nevada, you know that he’s been quite the journeyman in his short and quite frankly disappointing college career thus far. I’ll give a brief rundown for context.
Martell initially committed to Washington and head coach Steve Sarkisian back in 2012 before he was even in the eighth grade. He would eventually de-commit and verbally commit to Texas A&M, where he was compared to former A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Martell would never see the field for the Aggies though. He would be one of Urban Meyer’s signature signees in 2016 as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2017 out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. Martell signed with Ohio State and was a backup to Dwayne Haskins.
Martell made headlines by calling out Justin Fields before he transferred to Ohio State from Georgia who eventually became the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback. How incredibly awkward.
He then transferred to Miami where he briefly converted to a wide receiver but opted out of the 2020 season. It seems that Martell’s plan will be to graduate from Miami with two years of eligibility left and to find somewhere else to finish out his collegiate athletic career. Perhaps Martell comes back to his home state and finishes his career at UNLV?
Tate Martell has been a college football journeyman
In an Instagram video shown above, Martell says he’s ready for his next challenge and opportunity.
“I never learned how to really push myself until I did it at Ohio State,” Martell said in the video. “I learned it from JT Barrett, Joe Burrow, Dwayne (Haskins). I learned what the standard was for a quarterback. I had to go through what I went through this last four years to get where I’m about to be. The pain it has caused is my motivation every day. This story is going to change from what it’s been to this point. Now it’s just going to take one person to believe in me. I promise it’s going to be one of the best decisions they ever make.
“What I’m building right now is for that team. Everything I’m going through is for that team. I’m refining myself daily to become the person that everybody needs me to be, my family, my friends, my city. It’s all for them. I’ve got nothing to lose and everything to prove.”
