New York Yankees: 3 former players we need to come back to the Bronx
By Nick Villano
1. David Robertson
The Yankees are always looking for bullpen help. They especially want to take shots on veterans who can provide some reliable innings for cheap. The Yankees just did this with the signing of Darren O’Day. However, the Yankees can never have enough bullpen arms.
Once upon a time, David Robertson worked his way to being the setup man for Mariano Rivera. That was a long time ago, but since then, Robertson was basically a sunk cost for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was only able to pitch in seven games before he was out with an injury.
When the Yankees dealt Adam Ottovino to the Red Sox, they were opening up a spot in the bullpen (and in their luxury tax threshold). Robertson could easily fill a role trying to just be a sixth-inning guy when the Yankees need to take the starter out. He missed the last two seasons after Tommy John Surgery, so it might scare the Yankees away since they already have two pitchers dealing with this, but they showed with the Taillon deal that this alone won’t scare them away.
Robertson is doing a pitching showcase in February. He probably likes the idea of signing with the Yankees. Not only does he have a long history in the Bronx, but it’s much easier to move from Philadelphia to New York, especially during a pandemic. The Yankees bullpen has a lot of arms already, but if Robertson is healthy, who is better? Him or Jonathan Loaisiga? How about Luis Cessa? The Yankees need arms they can trust in the playoffs. Robertson has 30 playoff appearances and a career 3.48 ERA.
