Draymond Green has never been particularly fond of NBA referees. Maybe it’s because they remind him too much of himself.

Chapter 3,245 in the epic saga of Draymond Green and NBA referees has been released and, all things considered, it’s delightfully benign. Last week, Draymond picked up a technical foul for yelling at his own teammate and was ejected from the game. The referee crew later admitted it was a mistake and the ref who called the technical thought Draymond had been yelling at him, not James Wiseman.

So Draymond could be forgiven for feeling a little extra feisty. But after a call he didn’t like in Thursday’s night loss to the Phoenix Suns, he offered the referees a little friendly advice.

This is one of those delightful Draymond Green-isms that would have been lost to crowd noise in a regular season, inaudible on the broadcast.

Does anyone else see the irony in Draymond Green calling the referees “so emotional”?

There may not be a more outwardly emotional player in the NBA than Draymond Green and his emotions have certainly gotten him into trouble in the past. However, he does have a point. NBA referees should be impartial and stoic, seeing the game only through it’s physical mechanics and never it’s emotional implications.

For the players, on the other hand. Emotions are a tool. Technical fouls and antagonism of both refs and opponents have certainly have their costs but Draymond wouldn’t be nearly as effective a player if he played with the robotic detachment of, say, Davis Bertans. The force of his emotions is what makes Draymond such a forceful player.

Whatever caused the referee to make this specific call in this specific game, Draymond has a point. Irony aside, he should keep being emotional and the referees shouldn’t. This is not a “takes one to know one” situation.
