College football duos: Ranking the 32 best dynamic duos in modern history
By Nick Villano
22. Peter Warrick and Chris Weinke, Florida State
Peter Warrick had one of the great careers for a wide receiver. If he played now, he’d put up numbers similar to Ja’Marr Chase. He played in a different era, but Warrick was still dominant on the football field. He had 1,000 yards from scrimmage in back to back years and he even finished sixth in Heisman voting in 1999.
Bobby Bowden’s great Florida State teams paired him with Chris Weinke. It was a match made in football heaven. During Weike’s first season as the starter, Warrick had his best season statistically. Warrick averaged a ridiculous 20 yards per reception. He had 12 touchdowns in 12 games, while Weinke threw for 2,400 yards in 10 games.
Florida State was the first team to start the season ranked number one in 1999 and never left that position. They went on to face Michael Vick’s Virginia Tech team in the championship game and they absolutely destroyed them. Warrick was amazing from start to finish. No literally, he scored the first points of the game and the last points of the game. In the middle, he added a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown.
These two were a one-two combo for the ages. Weinke went on to play one extra season without Warrick and he was still very good. However, he never quite had the chemistry of someone with Warrick’s talent.
