College football duos: Ranking the 32 best dynamic duos in modern history
By Nick Villano
20. Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook, Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners had three straight amazing duos in a row. It finished with Kyler Murray-Marquise Brown and Jalen Hurts-CeeDee Lamb, but it all started with Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook. Mayfield and Westbrook are the only duo out of the three that had a longstanding relationship on the field.
Everyone knows Mayfield’s unique college story. He went to Texas Tech and became the starter as a freshman. Things went sour pretty quickly, even after he helped recruit Patrick Mahomes and he decided to take a chance and transfer to Oklahoma. He was hardly guaranteed a starter position, but he proved to be the right man under center.
His first start came at the beginning of the 2015 season. That just happened to also be Dede Westbrook’s first game with Oklahoma. Westbrook also had a strange journey to the Sooners, which started playing for Blinn College before transferring to play for Bob Stoops. It seemed like Mayfield and Westbrook were destined to make each other the best possible players at their positions.
Westbrook was one of the best players in the country in 2016, their second year together. He was an All-American, won the Biletnikoff Award and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Mayfield was first-team All-Big 12 every year he played with Westbrook, was named an All-American in their first year together and built the foundation that would eventually lead to him winning the Heisman Trophy.
