College football duos: Ranking the 32 best dynamic duos in modern history
By Nick Villano
11. Tommie Frazier and Ahman Green, Nebraska
Tommie Frazier and Ahman Green are the peaks of Nebraska football that the university has been striving for since they both left school. Those teams in the mid-90s were basically like how Alabama dominates today. In 1994 and 1995, the Cornhuskers won every single game. There was nobody even close to as good as Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers destroyed their opponents. In 1994, Nebraska faced five ranked opponents, including No. 2 Colorado and No. 3 Miami. The triple-option offense was unstoppable for all of them. However, in 1995, Ahman Green came into the fold and the offense took it up a notch.
Nebraska played four top-10 opponents in 1995. Nobody was able to come within 20 points. Frazier and Green combined for one of the most formidable duos. And this was on a defending national champion. It’s very rare that a college team not only brings back the talent from a championship season but actually grows upon that legacy.
Tommie Frazier is a College Football Hall of Famer for a reason (although, his induction took too long). He had been to two National Championship Games before Green showed up on campus. However, in 1995, Frazier hit a peak not many believed was possible. He won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Trophy and was finally named an All American. His best season statistically in that triple-option offense was with the most legit running back taking the focus of the defense.
Green made a huge impact right away. He had more than 1,000 yards in that first season. He also scored 16 total touchdowns. It’s a shame these two didn’t have more time together. There could have been more runs like this.
