College football duos: Ranking the 32 best dynamic duos in modern history
By Nick Villano
10. Danny Wuerffel and Reidel Anthony, Florida
Danny Wuerffel and Reidel Anthony found magic in 1996. Wuerffel was already establishing himself with the Florida Gators as one of the best quarterbacks in the country, but he took things up a notch during his senior season. That coincided with Anthony’s best season by far. They both put up career highs as they led the team to the National Championship.
It was a redemption year for Wuerffel, who made the National Championship Game the year before. His Gators got destroyed 62-24 against a powerhouse Nebraska team. So, to win it the next year, Wuerffel had to be great.
Anthony helped him hit a new ceiling in his career. Wuerffel won all the trophies in 1996. He won the Heisman (which he was a runner up in 1995), the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, the Draddy Trophy and the Davey O’Brien Award.
Anthony went from 366 yards in his sophomore season to 1,293 in his junior year. It was just a phenomenal jump from one year to the next. Wuerffel might have been able to take Florida to the National Championship with the rest of the talent on Florida (which included Fred Taylor and Ike Hilliard), but Anthony made them the best team in the nation and Wuerffel the most intimidating quarterback to play for Florida in a long time.
