Giants need to make a Godfather offer for Deshaun Watson
If the New York Giants want in on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, they have to be prepared to give the Texans an offer they can’t refuse.
Deshaun Watson wants a trade from Houston. The New York Giants need a spark to get their franchise back into contention.
Could a blockbuster deal become a reality?
Speculation is rampant, especially with Houston-based reporter John McClain laying out the Texans’ asking price on Twitter on Sunday. They want two first-round picks, two second-round picks and two young defensive starters.
Matt Lombardo of GMenHQ proposed an opening offer to satisfy the desires of the Texans. It would include Daniel Jones, Jabrill Peppers, Lorenzo Carter, first-round picks from 2021 and 2022 and second-rounders for 2021 and 2023.
The Giants have to go big to even think about Deshaun Watson
That’s an impressive haul to offer Houston, even if it would bring an elite quarterback to New York.
Unlike the Stafford-for-Goff-et-al deal, there could be no debating whether or not the quarterback upgrade is big enough. Even if you like Jones’ upside, he’s not in the same stratosphere as Watson.
Peppers had a solid 2020 and would have clear trade value, but Carter is coming off an Achilles injury.
It’s a good offer, but is it a “Godfather offer,” i.e. an offer they can’t refuse?
It’s certainly not Dan Orlovsky’s idea of sending Saquon Barkley and three first-rounders to Houston.
That just seems like madness, even if Watson is a game-changer at quarterback.
It doesn’t have to be Barkley, but the team that ultimately brings in Watson will have to make some huge sacrifices to get the quarterback they desire.
If New York wants him, they’ll have to show it undeniably since they don’t have the same level of draft picks to offer as the New York Jets or the Miami Dolphins. The Giants are picking 11th in 2021, while the Jets are second and Miami is third.
