Rams tried for Aaron Rodgers but Packers were ‘adamant’ about keeping him

Before the Los Angeles Rams acquired Matthew Stafford, they tried to land another NFC North quarterback in Aaron Rodgers.

The Los Angeles Rams did all NFL fans a favor by giving us something to talk about in the bye week before the Super Bowl. Late Saturday night, the Rams acquired Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions in exchange for two first-round draft picks, a third-rounder and quarterback Jared Goff. While the Rams did get an upgrade in the form of Stafford, he wasn’t the first NFC North quarterback they had in mind.

According to Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer, the Rams “made a run” at Aaron Rodgers, but the Green Bay Packers were “adamant” about keeping him.

Hey, you can’t fault the Rams for trying to land the soon-to-be three-time NFL MVP, especially when considering the events that took place last Sunday.

After the Packers were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, Rodgers talked about how his status with the Packers is uncertain entering the offseason. But days later, Rodgers clarified those comments on the Pat McAfee Show by saying he doesn’t “think there’s any reason [he] wouldn’t be back” with the Packers. Rather, he was stressing there were no absolutes in the NFL.

Rodgers is coming off a stellar season in Green Bay this season, as he threw for 4,299 yards, 48 touchdowns and five interceptions on a 70.7 completion percentage. And this all happened after the Packers traded up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Sure enough, the Packers aren’t ready to transition to Love just yet, especially after the year Rodgers had.

It’s evident now more than ever that Rodgers is going to be in a Packers uniform for the 2021 season. While Los Angeles couldn’t land him, they got themselves a solid consolation prize in Stafford.
