Urban Meyer adds former Alabama coach to Jaguars staff
By John Buhler
Urban Meyer is hiring former Alabama football coach Tosh Lupoi to join his Jacksonville Jaguars staff.
Urban Meyer’s Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff is rounding into form, as he is hiring Tosh Lupoi to be his new defensive line coach.
Lupoi had previously been on the 2019 Cleveland Browns and 2020 Atlanta Falcons coaching staffs. However, he is best known for his five years on Nick Saban’s Alabama football staff from 2014 to 2018. Lupoi recently served as Dan Quinn and later Raheem Morris’ defensive line coach and run-game coordinator in Atlanta. He had opportunities to be a college defensive coordinator.
Tosh Lupoi provides ample NFL experience to a former college head coach
While there is no doubt about Meyer’s coaching acumen at the college level, the former Ohio State and Florida head coach has never worked in the NFL before. He is not coaching 18 to 23-year-olds at blue-blood programs anymore. Meyer is taking over a team that lost its last 15 games of the 2020 season. Jacksonville has only been to the AFC playoffs once since 2008. They are rebuilding.
What Lupoi can provide is knowledge of the NFL game to help a talented head coach like Meyer get caught up to speed. We know Meyer and remotely promoted general manager Trent Baalke will draft well. We also know the players on the 2021 Jaguars roster will be coached up. However, they could be out-schemed by a more savvy NFL head coach over a first-time one in Meyer.
By adding Lupoi to his staff, Meyer hopes to gain NFL experience from this Nick Saban disciple.
