Texas football legend Vince Young is returning to the program as a special staff member.

Legendary Texas Longhorn Vince Young is making his way back to Austin.

Young is coming back to his alma mater to help develop players and serve the community. He is currently listed in Texas’s staff directory as a special assistant on the athletics administration. The former Longhorn quarterback tweeted on Monday evening to address speculation of his new position.

Earl Campbell, Jody Conradt and DeLoss Dodds are also listed as special assistants on the directory. Information on Young’s estimated salary in the position has not yet been released, nor have details on his specific duties in the role.

Vince Young joining Texas Longhorn staff once again

This isn’t Young’s first rodeo on the Longhorns’ staff though. He was formerly employed part-time job as a Neighborhood Longhorns development officer. His time with the team came to an end in 2019 after he was fired “for not demonstrating significant and sustained improvement in the performance of (his) job responsibilities and failing to maintain standards of conduct suitable and acceptable to the university.”, according to Associated Press.

Young was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2005 for the Longhorns, while also winning the Davey O’Brien, Manning and Maxwell awards before finishing second to Reggie Bush in the Heisman running.

He led his team to an 11-0 record that year and had one of the most memorable college football performances ever in the 2006 Rose Bowl when he scored the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds to lead the Longhorns to the national championship over Bush’s Trojans. His jersey has been retired at the university since 2008 and Voung is a recent inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame

Texas fans have to be happy to have Young back in the mix in Austin and help restore the program to the heights they experienced when he was in uniform.
