2021 NFL Mock Draft: Texans find a Deshaun Watson replacement in the first-round
By Brad Weiss
While it’s Super Bowl week, 30 other teams in the NFL are paying closer attention to April than to Sunday.
Super Bowl LV is set, as the Kansas City Chiefs will look to go back-to-back when they take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After Sunday, all eyes shift to the 2021 NFL Draft, and there is certainly a ton of elite talent out there for the taking.
Here is our latest 2021 NFL Mock Draft.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will remain as the first team selecting this April, and with the pick, they bring in a franchise quarterback for new head coach Urban Meyer. The consensus first overall pick this April is Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who will come in and try to change the fortunes of this franchise.
Jacksonville will get to hit the reset button with the biggest head coaching splash, and the best quarterback prospect many believe we have seen in a long time. The Jaguars play in a tough division, one that produced two playoff teams this past season, so they have a lot of work to do.
*Trade with New York Jets*
Deshaun Watson wants out of Houston, and though the organization does not want to lose him, they may have no choice. The relationship with Watson and the Texans goes up to the owner, so there is no way they can keep him as long as the McNairs own the team, so they swing a monster deal here.
Houston finds a suitor in the New York Jets, who hold two first-round picks this April, taking both of those picks, another first-rounder next year, and probably even more capital. With a new head coach in place, Joe Douglas makes the move for Watson, and with the Jets No. 2 pick, they add BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.
The Miami Dolphins decide to stand pat with their No. 3 selection, passing on bringing in Deshaun Watson in this mock draft. Instead, they decide to build around former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa, adding the best offensive lineman in this draft class.
Penei Sewell is a guy who could come in and start right away along this Miami offensive line, and they certainly need to protect their No. 1 asset in Tagovailoa. Tua will have to prove he is the franchise guy next season because if he falters, the Dolphins could be in the market to make a change in 2022.
