3 teams that should trade for Gary Sanchez amid Yankees drama

There’s trouble in paradise between New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and catcher Gary Sanchez. Is a trade looming?

Gary Sanchez was once known as a highly-regarded catcher for the New York Yankees and was deemed an untouchable prospect in trade talks. After a strong start to the beginning of his career, Sanchez has dropped in two key facets of the game — batting and defense. Sanchez’s performance was bad enough this past season to earn him a benching in the postseason.

At the end of the season, Sanchez participated in an interview in which he expressed confusion as to why he was ever benched. General manager Brian Cashman responded months later to his catcher being upset, saying he was benched for having “a horrible year.”

There is no talk or any indication that the Yankees are going to go through a divorce with Sanchez, because Cashman himself said he still believes in him. Things can always change though, and the two could agree that parting ways would be the best thing to do moving forward.

But where would he go? Here are three teams that should trade for Sanchez.

The Colorado Rockies may not want to admit it, but they are definitely heading toward a rebuild.

This past year, the story surrounding the Rockies was the trade talk surrounding third baseman Nolan Arenado due to a deteriorating relationship the star had with the organization. After months of speculation, the Rockies finally opted to trade Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Austin Gomber and four prospects.

Given that the Rockies traded their franchise star, it’s only a matter of time before they trade the likes of shortstop Trevor Story or starting pitcher Jon Gray. But given general manager Jeff Bridich won’t stand for any rebuilding talk, you can’t rule out the executive making a move for a name. Sanchez could be one.

When looking at Colorado’s major league roster, they only have two catchers on the depth chart in Elias Diaz and Dom Nunez. Diaz batted .235 this past season, while Nunez hit .179. Sanchez is a known slugger, and this past season is the only time in which he recorded a slugging percentage lower than .400. Taking that into consideration, just imagine what Sanchez could do in high altitude. The Rockies should be interested in bringing Sanchez’s power bat and home runs to the Mile High City.

Would it cheer up the fanbase that’s still upset about the Arenado trade? Probably not. But if all goes well with Sanchez, maybe the pain can be eased a little bit.
