3 Chiefs players who won’t get another shot at a Super Bowl
2. Sammy Watkins, WR
Sammy Watkins’ time with the Chiefs simply hasn’t gone as planned. After joining the organization in 2018, the veteran wideout hasn’t topped 673 yards in a season. Those weren’t the expectations set for the former Clemson star when he made his way to Arrowhead Stadium, originally signing a three-year deal worth $48 million.
Last April, the Chiefs were reportedly considering releasing Watkins, but they were able to restructure his contract for 2020. His new deal pays him $9 million this year. With Watkins all set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, there’s just no way Kansas City brings him back.
This season, Watkins has been held to only 37 receptions for 421 yards and two scores. He’s also battled injuries, causing him to miss nearly half the campaign. The hope was that Watkins would be able to ball out this fall and winter and prove to the team that they should re-sign him, but that hasn’t been the case.
Currently, Watkins is fighting a calf injury, but he’s expected to be good to go for the Super Bowl against the Bucs. If Kansas City wins, Watkins should cherish that moment forever. It really is looking like he won’t be returning next season and will have to find a new place to call home for next fall.
