Raiders offseason rumors, Bud Dupree

2. Bud Dupree

Dupree is a better option at edge rusher than Judon, but the same logic still applies. The former Steeler is also set to be overpaid in free agency on the back of his strong sack totals.

While Dupree is a better player than Judon in a vacuum, he’s arguably an even worse fit for the way the Raiders want to play on defense under Gus Bradley. Vegas wants to create pressure with their standard front four under their new defensive coordinator. Adding a hybrid pass-rusher like Dupree would significantly reduce the Raiders’ scheme flexibility moving forward.

Dupree will still solicit lucrative offers in free agency. The Raiders desperately need to avoid the temptation to jump into that fray. The fan base will understandably be clamoring for the acquisition of a high-profile sack artist this offseason. Landing Dupree would win the press conference but it wouldn’t add to the team’s win total in 2021.

Mike Mayock and his staff need to narrow their focus to rush ends who can produce consistent pressure in base 4-3 looks. Signing a guy like Dupree who thrives in more of a 3-4 setup would be a poor use of resources. The Raiders need to avoid spending big money on the wrong edge rusher this year.
