2. Worst quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl – Jeff Hostetler

Being a true backup quarterback to win the Super Bowl made Jeff Hostetler a lock for this list. A long-time backup for Simms with the Giants, Hostetler got his chance to step into the spotlight when Simms broke his foot late in the 1990 season.

Hostetler helped the Giants secure a first-round bye, which was key as New York defeated the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers to earn a spot in Super Bowl XXV. The win over the 49ers was a gutty one for Hostetler, who hurt his knee early in the game but came back to help the Giants pull off the upset.

With a matchup against the explosive Buffalo Bills’ offense in the Super Bowl, Giants’ head coach Bill Parcells installed a run-heavy gameplan to limit possessions. Hostetler wasn’t asked to do much but was efficient, completing 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown in the win.

The victory did help Hostetler secure the starting job in New York but he never developed into a frontline starter. Hostetler’s moment in the sun was great for his career but not enough to escape a high placement on this list.
