2. Trade Eric Ebron

This is another move that is strictly financial. Eric Ebron is an $8.5 million cap hit in what is the final year of his deal with the Steelers.

Ebron was not bad by any measure in 2020. In fact, he finished as the top tight end with 558 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He is now set to enter the 2021 season as the only real option at tight end following the retirement of Vance McDonald.

But let’s remember his 2020 numbers. They were nothing spectacular, and the Steelers could save $6 million by trading him. He is also still playing well enough to fetch more than just a throwaway draft pick.

Trading players like Haden and Ebron early this offseason can allow the Steelers to get under the cap and get their finances in order. They can then possibly decide to draft a tight end or even pick up a free agent or two on small deals.

Moving veteran players on expiring deals also lets the Steelers prepare for life after Roethlisberger. The last thing they want is to have a ton of players walk in free agency without a backup plan in 2021.
