Conflicting reports emerge on Trevor Bauer’s deal with Mets

Conflicting reports emerged about free agent pitcher Trevor Bauer having a deal with the New York Mets.

At the conclusion of the season, many were wondering where Trevor Bauer would land in free agency. After winning the NL Cy Young during his impressive campaign with the Cincinnati Reds, Bauer skyrocketed to the top of the free-agency rankings. After months of speculation, Bauer has found his new team. Or, maybe not?

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Bauer and the New York Mets have a deal. Reports earlier in the day indicated that the Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers were the two remaining teams in the Bauer sweepstakes.

However, FanSided’s Robert Murray and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand refuted that report, tweeting that the Mets and Bauer don’t have a deal at this time.

Situation between Mets, Bauer still fluid

Bauer is coming off the best season of his career, which netted him the award for best pitcher in the National League. In 11 regular-season starts with the Reds, Bauer led the majors in ERA (1.73), ERA+ (276), WHIP (0.795), complete games (two) and shutouts (two). Additionally, Bauer allowed the lowest hits per nine innings (5.1).

The Mets are considered the most likely team to land him. With new owner Steve Cohen, the belief was that he would be in on the top free agents in the class, including Bauer. With the Mets losing out to the Toronto Blue Jay for George Springer and the Philadelphia Phillies re-signing J.T. Realmuto, the Mets have all the money available to make a strong push for him.

During an appearance on the Carton and Roberts radio show on Thursday, WFAN’s Ed Coleman reported that the Mets’ offer is for three years and worth $93 million, with an opt-out after the first season. Bauer would have the option to test the open market again if he has a strong season in 2021 with the Mets. Considering Bauer would join a rotation consisting of Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Carlos Carrasco and David Peterson and one of the better hitting teams in the league this past year, that’s a desirable destination for him.
