Bears rumors: Chicago winning Carson Wentz ‘bidding war’ for now
Several NFL teams are interested in rescuing Carson Wentz from his nightmare in Philadelphia, but the Bears currently have outbid the competition.
The Bears are anxious to turn the page at quarterback. That’s why they currently lead the race to pry Carson Wentz away from the Eagles. No deal is imminent between the two franchises, but Chicago is in the pole position to land the talented signal-caller.
Reports emanating from Chicago claim that a sort of “bidding war” is emerging for the out of favor quarterback. It’s unclear exactly what the Bears have offered to clinch the deal. The only thing the reports definitely claim is that Matt Nagy’s team has outbid the competition to date.
If the deal is finished off, Wentz will step in to lead a Bears offense that’s been starved for quarterback play in recent seasons. Neither Mitchell Trubisky nor Nick Foles played the position with any sort of consistent quality in 2020. Nagy clearly believes he can succeed where Doug Pederson failed with Wentz.

Matt Nagy willing to take a flier on Carson Wentz
The Eagles seem prepared to go with Jalen Hurts as Wentz’s successor unless they pull a major surprise by selecting a new signal-caller in Round 1 of April’s NFL Draft. Hurts showed flashes of quality down the stretch for Philadelphia last season, but he’s still largely an unproven commodity as an NFL quarterback. It remains to be seen how he will handle working with new Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni.
Gambling on Wentz would likely be Nagy’s last chance to succeed in Chicago. He arrived in the Windy City with the reputation of being an offensive guru. Erratic play at the game’s most important position has derailed any efforts Nagy has undertaken to forge his team into legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Success will hinge on the Bears’ ability to provide Wentz with a meaningful upgrade in terms of pass protection. He suffered mightily behind Philadelphia’s porous offensive line in 2020. Wentz’s problems ran deeper than simply seeing ghosts in the pocket, but that’s the first thing Chicago should address if they want to get Wentz back to his best.
