Eagles: Sure seems like Carson Wentz wants out of Philadelphia
Carson Wentz’s silence speaks volumes. It’s clear the quarterback wants to engineer a trade that will allow him to leave the Eagles this offseason.
The potential quarterback controversy facing the Eagles in 2021 looks as if it will end before it ever truly begins. Carson Wentz doesn’t seem to be in any mood to engage Jalen Hurts in any sort of battle to be Philadelphia’s top signal-caller.
Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer goes so far as to say he’s been told by an NFL source that a deal for the Eagles quarterback is “close.” Perhaps more telling is the fact that Wentz has stopped making public statements about his desire to stay in Philadelphia. More specifically, he’s been noticeably quiet about any potential excitement for working with new Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni.
Eagles: Is a Carson Wentz trade looming?
Wentz’s massive contract remains the biggest obstacle standing between the quarterback and his potential exit from Philadelphia. His projected cap hit for the 2021 season is just under $35 million. Precious few teams around the league have the salary cap flexibility required to take Wentz in without making massive roster changes.
Any potential deal for Wentz will also force the Eagles to accept a massive amount of dead cap. Philadelphia is heading for a rebuild in 2021 if they make such a seismic change at quarterback. Exchanging Wentz for Hurts might be the right long-term move for the franchise, but it’s going to cause short-term problems for Sirianni in his first season.
It’s also unclear what sort of return the Eagles might be able to reasonably expect to receive in exchange for their former franchise quarterback. His ugly play during the 2020 season raises a lot of questions about just how capable he is of being a starter moving forward. Philadelphia would love to demand significant draft capital in return for Wentz, but they might be forced to part with him for a middling draft choice.
The bottom line here is that Wentz appears ready to give up on the franchise that drafted him. It remains to be seen just how ready the Eagles are to concede to his desires.
