On the night before Super Bowl 55, Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette reminded everyone that the Jacksonville Jaguars waived him.

In less than 24 hours, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take the field for their first Super Bowl appearance since 2003, when they won their first and only Lombardi Trophy. The Buccaneers made plenty of additions throughout the year to bolster their roster, such as quarterback Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Antonio Brown. And then, there’s running back Leonard Fournette, who was signed just before the start of the 2020 regular-season.

On the night before Super Bowl 55, Fournette tweeted out a screen capture of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ official announcement that the team had waived him with the caption, “I remember.”

Jaguars moved on from Fournette prior to season

Fournette was the fourth-overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2017 NFL Draft. After three seasons, the organization decided they wanted to move on from him prior to the start of the 2020 campaign. The Jaguars opted to waive him after head coach Doug Marrone claimed they “couldn’t get anything” for him. After going unclaimed, Fournette moved across the state of Florida to sign with the Buccaneers. And Fournette ultimately proved his worth.

Fournette didn’t make much of an impact in the regular-season, as he was the backup behind starter Ronald Jones. In 13 games, Fournette rushed for 367 yards and six touchdowns on 97 carries, while catching 36-of-47 targets for 233 yards. But once the playoffs began, Fournette stepped up.

In the postseason, Fournette scored a touchdown in each of Tampa Bay’s games against the Washington Football Team, New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers. In total, Fournette accumulated 211 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 48 carries and caught 14-of-17 targets for 102 yards and a score.

Fournette will look to carry the playoff momentum into Super Bowl Sunday in hopes of him hoisting the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in his career. As for the Jaguars, they prepare for a busy offseason that will be highlighted by the team selecting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence first-overall in the upcoming NFL Draft.
