The pregame festivities ahead of Super Bowl 55 have all been incredible so far this evening. Just before the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, a host of incredible performers took the stage to start the festivities. The incredible musical performances certainly didn’t disappoint but a nice change of pace has us all feeling a little more inspired than we were before.
Amanda Gorman recited ahead of the big game that we’ll be talking about for years to come. Gorman is the country’s National Youth Poet Laureate, the first to ever be appointed to the position. Her poem “The Hill We Climb” that she delivered at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden propelled her into the national spotlight. She’s garnered the attention of enough to earn herself a spot on stage during the biggest television event of the year.
Amanda Gorman’s poem honors COVID-19 workers
22-year-old Gorman’s poem honored three for their work during the coronavirus pandemic. Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis, Florida nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Pittsburgh-based James Martin, a Marine veteran all volunteered with the Wounded Warrior Project and have taken in and sheltered local kids facing problems at home.
Watch as Gorman encapsulates all that the country has been through in the last year.
As the NFL and the country as a whole continue to uplift the voices of all affected by both social justice issues and coronavirus, it’s incredible that they would give Gorman the opportunity to showcase her talent on such a huge stage.
Even Gorman had to take a second to acknowledge the fact that poetry was being recited during the biggest event on television for the year.
This performance set the tone for what is sure to be an incredible game between the Chiefs and Buccaneers.
