Believe it or not, Blaine Gabbert is now a Super Bowl champion
Blaine Gabbert and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are Super Bowl champions.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know: Tom Brady is now a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
But you know what’s really interesting? Blaine Gabbert has now won as many Super Bowls as Patrick Mahomes.
Thanks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ dominant 31-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55, Gabbert is officially an NFL champion.
Blaine Gabbert carves his place in Super Bowl history
What a long, winding road it’s been for Gabbert, the former 10th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars actually traded up six spots to select him as the next savior of their franchise. That couldn’t have been further from reality, as Gabbert struggled in each of his three seasons with the Jags.
It didn’t take long for the “draft bust” label to stick, and to be honest, he probably should’ve been out of the league years ago. Don’t forget, this was the same guy who started over Colin Kaepernick when he lost his job with the San Francisco 49ers, and Gabbert has been bouncing around the NFL for the last five years just trying to keep his job as a backup.
He played zero games for the Bucs as the backup last year, and if anything had happened to Tom Brady this season, Tampa Bay would’ve been in serious trouble. But Gabbert held onto that backup job, appearing in four games, completing nine of his 16 pass attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns in his limited action this year.
While those meager contributions won’t exactly rewrite his story, there is one truth that stands out above all others when it comes to quarterback legacies in Super Bowl 55. It’s not about Mahomes or Brady. It’s that Blaine Gabbert is now a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
