Twitter had some thoughts on Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church’s performance of the national anthem for Super Bowl 55.

Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church performed the national anthem ahead of Super Bowl 55, so it is only fitting that Twitter would have some things to say about their rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”.

It started with Church doing a soulful, country rendition with a ton of reverb on the guitar. He was later joined by Sullivan in a very interesting collaboration between the two artists. It was a slower pace than most of us expected. It also gave off some Fergie at the NBA All-Star Game a few years back vibes. Overall, it was a pleasant auditory experience, albeit an unexpected one for sure.

The instant reviews of this national anthem were mixed with Sullivan getting most universal praise, while some were not that keen on Church’s bluesy rendition of it.

Again, this one-time collaboration across multiple musical genres is not for everyone, but it does seem that most people preferred Sullivan over Church with this performance.

Ultimately, people who really dug the duet were probably fans of Church to begin with.

Overall, this was a different take on the national anthem from what we have seen at a Super Bowl in a while. Going with the guitar accompaniment for Church was a bold choice, but he pulled it off about as well as his purple blazer. As for Sullivan, oh, she carried both of them throughout the rest of the song. It was a beautiful rendition on what looks to be a beautiful night in Tampa.

Here is to Super Bowl 55 being one for the ages. May the best team win.
