3 surprise cuts the Jets could make this offseason
1. Jamison Crowder, WR
Before we get into this one. Please, remember this article is titled “surprise cuts”. Not “logical cuts”, or “likely cuts,” but “surprise cuts.” Here is why cutting Jamison Crowder would be a surprise, but also one that could end up making sense.
Mainly, the reason cutting Crowder has some value to it is to get younger. Yes, he has been a great Jet, racking up 1,532 yards for 137 catches and 12 touchdowns in 19 starts. However, he is turning 28 and played just 12 games in 2020.
Now, here is where the logic seems to come into play. Why not get younger at a key position? Maybe sign and replace Crowder with a free agent receiver like Curtis Samuel?
In this new Mike LaFleur offense, there are going to be a ton of similarities to the unit he helped run under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers. Therefore, receivers like Samuel seem to be the ones that thrive in this offensive attack.
Last year, Samuel had 851 yards on 77 receptions with three scores. He also had 200 rushing yards with two touchdowns. He is versatile and can do a lot of things for an offense. He is an upgrade from Crowder.
Douglas will probably look to ink another wideout in free agency or draft one in the first round. So, adding Samuel with Denzel Mims and potentially someone like Allen Robinson/DeVonta Smith/Ja’Marr Chase would give whoever is under center for the team next season a lot to work with.
