UNC basketball: Miami game canceled after maskless Tar Heels violate Covid protocols with party

The UNC-Miami game was postponed after two Tar Heels players were spotted partying without face masks.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were coming off a huge win against the rival Duke Blue Devils this past Saturday. The team was looking to create a winning streak on Monday against the Miami Hurricanes, but that is now out of the question.

Mere hours before tipoff, the North Carolina-Miami game was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported that the reasoning behind the decision was due to a video surfacing of Tar Heels players Day’Ron Sharpe and Armando Bacot partying without wearing face masks, which made Miami hesitant to play the contest.

ACC releases official statement on postponement

“The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that the Miami at North Carolina men’s basketball game will be postponed,” the ACC announced in an official statement on Monday. “The game was originally scheduled to be played today, Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.

“The postponement follows a meeting of personnel from both schools, who mutually concluded the game could not move forward today. Both teams continue to adhere to the minimum outlined protocols within the ACC Medical Advisory Group report, which is available on ACC.com.”

The video in question was obtained by North Carolina’s student newspaper, the Daily Tar Heel, which showed Sharpe and Bacot at a party with several people, none of whom were wearing masks. Prior to the postponement, the status of both players for the Miami game was dependent on COVID-19 test results, per C.L. Brown of the News and Observer.

In the 91-87 victory over Duke, Bacot recorded 16 points, six rebounds and two steals (6-for-12 from field), while Sharpe scored 11 points and hauled in nine rebounds off the bench (5-for-5 from field).

As of this writing, North Carolina’s game against No. 9 Virginia is scheduled to take place as scheduled this upcoming Saturday.
