Kansas City Chiefs free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
4. Haason Reddick
The Chiefs continue to search for a quality edge rusher who can provide protection opposite Frank Clark. In a perfect world, they’d land a conventional defensive end who can hold up against both the run and the pass. Reddick isn’t that sort of complete player, but he can harass opposing quarterbacks.
His lack of track record as a sack artist should keep Reddick’s market from exceeding Kansas City’s price range. That’s an understandable concern for teams given the fact that pressing the quarterback is Reddick’s only real skill. He’s a disaster when asked to drop into coverage.
Again, Kansas City is a team that can afford to employ such a specialist. Their potent offense puts their defense in a position to protect leads on a relatively high percentage of snaps. That gives them plenty of opportunities to rush the opposing passer with reckless abandon.
The Chiefs should be careful not to overcommit to Reddick in terms of years, but a one-year agreement at less than $10 million could pay off handsomely for Kansas City. Reddick is a player who could give this defense 10 or more sacks in 2021.
